An investigation by scientific communities led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in collaboration with the Environmental Working Group, suggests that on average, “91 industrial toxic and often disease causing chemicals that are found in many of the products that we use every day - stay in our bodies because we can’t break them down.” Obviously these chemicals, which tend to build up, may cause serious diseases like cancer. The complexity of chemicals used by companies these days makes it virtually impossible for us consumers to determine whether or not these chemicals are harmful - yes even many so called "Organic" products. The researchers behind Skin Deep, the Environmental Working Group, have compiled a database of more than 25,000 cosmetic products and compared it against 50 definitive toxicity and regulatory databases, making it the largest integrated data resource of its kind. Why did a small nonprofit take on such a big project? Because the FDA doesn't require companies to test their own products for safety. Each product has been given a hazard rating from 0 to 10, with 10 being the most dangerous level of toxicity.
